This landscape painting demonstrates Thomas Chambers' fascination with shape and form, particularly in the curves of the sails and boat. Interestingly, the type of boat depicted - the felucca - was a distinctive vessel used only in the Mediterranean. Since Chambers is not known to have travelled there, it is likely that the painting was based on a printed depiction.
